Travel Nursing Destination Spotlight: Washington

WashingtonWith a scenic coastline of more than 150 miles, Washington is the Pacific Northwest’s crowning jewel. Though it’s best known for the birth of grunge music and hip coffeehouses, the state offers much more.

To experience Washington, you can endeavor outdoors for a whale-watching adventure or take a seaplane tour over Seattle. Either way, there are plenty of reasons to make Washington the next stop in your travel-nursing career.

Wondrous natural beauty

The Evergreen State’s diverse natural beauty is what makes Washington one of the world’s most picturesque locations. Home to 14 national parks, including two along the Pacific coast, Washington offers many photo opportunities for travelers.

Olympic National Park is one of the state’s best and features Ruby Beach, named for the ruby-colored gemstones in its sand. The shoreline offers scenic views of mountains, glaciers and majestic rock formations in the water.

Another impressive location to visit is Mount Rainier National Park. Ascending 14,411 feet above sea level, this mountain is bucket list-worthy. Cross this off your list by viewing the peak via gondola to the summit of nearby Crystal Mountain. The San Juan Islands consist of a whopping 172 islands and are a great place to see pods of Orcas and other marine mammals.

Follow the yellow brick road

Seattle’s nickname is the Emerald City, and it’s easy to get lost in the wonders the city has to offer. At the top of the list is Chihuly Garden and Glass, located at the base of the Space Needle, which features an amazing array of both indoor and outdoor installations of hand-blown glass. With 11 individual exhibits, it’s truly candy for the eyes.

Another Seattle staple is the Pike Place Market. Take a Sunday afternoon to roam one of our country’s oldest farmers’ markets, well-known for its fish throwing vendors and the first Starbucks. Be sure to see the Post Alley Gum Wall while you’re there.

One of the strangest parks in the world is the Gas Works Park, which includes a children’s play barn and picnic area converted from an obsolete gas plant. For one last stop in Seattle, make sure you check out the public library, a 10-floor architectural masterpiece.

Orchards of the West

Most of the region’s apples are handpicked in the Wenatchee Valley. Washington produces billions of apples annually, and many of the orchards offer the option to pick and fill your own bags for around 50 cents a pound. Small farms dot the landscape and are excellent spots to get farm-fresh eggs, vegetables and fruit.

Grapes are also grown abundantly in Washington, and wineries are great places to unwind from a long workweek. Chateau Ste. Michelle is one of Washington’s finest, featuring award-winning wines and a French-style chateau. With some of the oldest vines in Washington, DeLille Cellars in Woodinville is also a great spot to relax and taste a variety of blends.

The Pacific Northwest is an open playground for the senses and a fantastic place to experience life. Check out our open travel nursing jobs in Washington.
