The Institute of Medicine, along with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, launched an initiative in 2008 to help nurses overcome barriers and become better positioned to lead changes in healthcare. Here are three key messages that came as a result of this initiative:

  • Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training
  • Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system
  • Nurses should be full partners in redesigning healthcare in the United States
