Travel Nurse Spotlight: Princess Conty

Princess Conty, travel nurseTelemetry travel nurse Princess Conty was surrounded by other nurses in her family even as a child. However, it wasn’t until something happened to someone close to her that she knew she wanted to pursue nursing as a career.

Nurturing others as a nurse

“A couple years ago, my grandmother suffered a stroke. The doctors told us she had a 50/50 chance of making it through,” Princess recalls. “I saw her at her worst, but I also saw her when she made it all the way back. The nurses were there for her and nurtured her back to health. I was there with my grandmother through it all, and that made me decide, ‘Hey, I want to do this for other people, too.'”

Taking travel nursing jobs with your spouse

A Virginia native, Princess met her husband, Jason, back home in nursing school and made the decision to take travel nursing jobs with him by her side. After being married just a few short years, she and Jason sold their home and gave away most of their belongings to focus on travel nursing jobs.

“It was a little hard at first to get rid of almost everything, but it’s about the experience. Travel nursing is something we always talked about when we were in nursing school,” Princess says. “We’re going to continue to travel together for a couple of years at least. We have nothing holding us back, so we are taking the opportunity to take jobs together.”

Succeeding as a traveler

Princess says one of the biggest misconceptions about travel nurses is that they already know everything. Since travel nurses frequently get only two days of orientation, it’s important to be prepared for anything, she says.

“You have to be really flexible and adaptable to the environment and open-minded. I’m not afraid to ask questions because what’s important is patient safety. Make sure you have all the right protocols and do everything the hospital wants you to correctly,” Princess says. “Spread your wings a little and ask coworkers for help. They are always willing to guide you along the way. Don’t think you have to do it all on your own.”

Enjoying your nursing career

With four years of nursing experience behind her and many more ahead, Princess looks forward to her job and to future assignments with her husband.

“I love being a nurse because I can be that light for patients who are in their darkest times,” Princess says. “It’s wonderful to lend a helping hand, offer patients compassion and show them that they can get through anything as long as they have someone there with them.”

Princess was among the eight nurses who attended our recent nurse panel. Check out her video to learn more about her experiences — and read Jason’s spotlight as well.
